DECA Team Posts Wins at Invitational

SMA students took home several trophies at the University of Denver DECA Inviteinvitational on Friday, Oct. 28. The future business leaders and entrepreneurs sat for a 100-question DECA exam and competed in individual and team events against 11 other schools from the Denver area. 

  • Sara Stander (Grade 12) took 1st place in Principles of Finance Individual Event

  • Kat Adams (Grade 12) and Kate Kotowski (Grade 11) took 2nd place in the Hospitality Services Team Event

  • Janelle Amor (Grade 10) and Caitlin Walling (Grade 12) took 2nd place in the Marketing Management Team Event

  • Mary Sarah Mounsey (Grade 11) and Laila Shroff (Grade 11) took 3rd place in the Entrepreneurship Team Event

  • Janey Nollsch (Grade 11) took 3rd place in the Principles of Business Administration Individual Event

  • Sydney Tatar (Grade 11) took 4th place in the Marketing Communications Individual Event

  • Marlow Blanchard (Grade 11) and Mykaela Mathieson (Grade 11) took 4th place in the Hospitality Services Team event  


SMA Business Teacher and DECA Sponsor Jim Konrad said, "Our students are so dedicated to seeing the DECA program grow.  They show up every morning for our class before school and work hard to be successful.  We are lucky to have such a great leadership team in Kat Adam, Kate Kotowski, Sydney Tatar, and Mary Sarah Mounsey.  I am extremely proud of all our members and wouldn’t trade them for anything!" 

The team is now preparing for the District Conference which will take place at the Douglas County Fairgrounds on Thursday, November 17th.  Parents interested in judging the competitions should reach out to for registration information. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. In addition to the members mentioned above, additional DECA members include Kate Barton, Tatum Busch, Devon Chambers, Naomi Conrad, Lauren Garofalo, Liv Lane, Ellie Martin, Katie Mueller, Rand Neren, Alondra Rodriguez, Miles Sanchez, and Jackie Sevilla. 

DECA is a non-profit student organization with more than 177,000 members in all 50 states, Washington, DC, Canada, China, Germany, Poland, Guam, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Spain. DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management in high schools and colleges. 

DECA will compete at the State DECA Conference at the Broadmoor Hotel in February of 2023 and again at the National DECA Conference in Orlando FL, in April of 2023.
