SMA Art Teacher Wins Best of Show

A charcoal work, Premonition, by Andrew Beckham was awarded Best of Show at the Coors Western Art Exhibition at the Red Carpet Reception on January 4. The exhibit, associated with the National Western Stock Show, is considered one of the finest contemporary Western art exhibits in the United States.

"What I do in the art world outside the classroom allows me to be a better, more authentic teacher for my students," says Mr. Beckham. "It's a dynamic that makes my professional life rich and renewing in both directions."

Mr. Beckham has been a fine arts teacher in the High School for 22 years and is the Visual Arts Department Chair. His reach extends from beginning drawing and photography classes to Illustrated Book and AP Studio Art classes. A multi-faceted artist, author, filmmaker and Fulbright Fellow, Mr. Beckham's photographs are in the permanent collections of the Denver Art Museum and MacArthur Foundation among many others.

Up to 75 artists are selected each year for the gallery exhibition. Proceeds benefit the National Western Scholarship Trust.
