What Do We Want for our Children?

When we ask ourselves the question, “What do we want for our children?”, most of the time our answers are similar.  We want them to be happy, healthy, caring and contributing members of society. This seems simple enough yet hard to put into action. How do we help students and children to be fulfilled? I believe it begins with empathy.

The Lower School is a happy place! Here, children are treasured, encouraged, and loved. St. Mary’s Academy’s Lower School is a co-educational program beginning with Pre-Kindergarten and continuing through grade 5. The Lower School learning environment allows children to grow in a happy, positive, and engaging community. Lower School teachers nurture and challenge their students academically, physically, and spiritually as they develop a sense of themselves and their place in the world. Students are busy, and engaged and willing to try new things in this trusting environment. With love and patience, our teachers hold students to high academic and behavioral expectations in a physical environment designed for exploration and independence. Teachers create lessons that maximize authentic learning in the acquisition of new skills and concepts.

Lower School Loretto Leaders

Each year, third - fifth grade students may apply to become Loretto Leaders. This is a coveted leadership position at the Lower School. Students submit an application and a brief essay to be considered. The students who are selected by Mrs. Smith are responsible for greeting families during Lower School Preview events, conducting group tours along with an adult tour guide, assisting on other Admissions events, and answering questions posed by prospective students and their families.

“We just wanted to send a warm thank you for all you have done for our daughter this first half of her Kindergarten year. We can’t believe how fast she has learned so much. Additionally, what you are doing to create such a warm, inclusive, and fun classroom culture is exactly what we were looking for in a school for our daughter. You obviously put all of this and more into making sure our kids have a safe and happy learning environment to go to each and every day.”
