Head Coach: Timothy Wompey
This will be Coach Tim’s first season at St. Mary's Academy . Coach Tim brings 12 years of coaching experience to the team. Previous experiences include coaching at Horizon, Arvada and Lakewood High Schools as both an assistant coach and head coach. In addition, he currently coaches club in the Boulder community. Tim has coached every level of club from the 17's teams to 12 and Unders. Club responsibilities have grown into running clinics and camps as well as developing club philosophy and player development programs. One of Coach Tim’s greater interests is how athletes advance through a better understanding of sports psychology. As a Colorado native playing volleyball started for him when he moved to San Diego and was a member of the Grossmont College club team. Tim was a middle and right side hitter.
"As a parent of a high school Junior and a college Freshman I see volleyball as a way for students to learn amazing life skills that will carry into their adulthood. Sports have a powerful way of building students up and creating a sense of confidence, passion, and commitment that in the long run will help our teenagers overcome many of life’s challenges. All athletes have the ability to grow with the right guidance. Volleyball as a team sport teaches kids how a group can achieve success when they work together to reach for a common goal. I’m a strong believer in the idea that a team can build up one player and one player can build up a team – I have witnessed both of these on the volleyball court. Life experiences as a teacher, coach, and volleyball player have taught me that Attitude Is Everything. My coach duties will include helping each member of the team grow in their skill set, developing a better understanding of the small things that can help them move from "Being Good to Being Great", and seeing how strategy can improve your game."
Assistant Coach: Lindsey Lopez
Lindsey Lopez has been part of the SMA volleyball program since 2017 and has worked full time at SMA since 2014. She is a member of the Admissions Team.
An avid fan of the sport, Lindsey played as a middle and high school student on both varsity and club teams in Southern Colorado as well as recreationally as a young adult. She was a setter and defensive player before the days of the current libero position.
Lindsey sees her role as an assistant coach to be of support and to reinforce the vision, goals, and philosophy of the head volleyball coach. In addition, she seeks to convey the importance of hard work and foster a team dynamic that both celebrates individual’s accomplishments when appropriate and is supportive, collaborative, and encouraging of one another at all times. Through this approach, she hopes that the SMA Wildcats recognize the importance of each individual player on the roster and that the team is most successful when we are all working hard and working together.
