Christy Statema is new to the SMA volleyball program. She is an avid volleyball fan and player, though her current avenues of play are restricted to recreation and grass leagues. She played volleyball through her high school and college years as well as in a club team for two years in Portugal. Throughout her playing career she has held positions as a defensive specialist, middle hitter and outside hitter. She has also coached multiple JV and C level teams and simply loves the game. Christy is also passionate about working alongside high school students which is what she does on a daily basis in her role as an Associate Director of Admission at the University of Denver.
Through her years of playing and coaching she has seen many different coaching techniques. The ones that most resonate with her are those that seek to create an emotionally and physically safe environment where players can be deeply invested in the team and their growth together and individually. If a player knows they are safe to be themselves, to try and to fail, growth as a player and as a team will happen naturally. She thrives in facilitating team bonding, a fun atmosphere on and off the court and dedication to a strong work ethic. She also believes that the key to a successful volleyball season and experience is to take the necessary time to develop the fundamentals and basic skills that the game is built upon. She considers a season where players can see growth in their play, have an incredible time and win some games as a tremendous success. She is extremely excited to be working with the SMA volleyball community no matter what form it takes this year.
