Community Service Sites

Although there are many service opportunities, we have a few restrictions for qualifying hours. Hours completed doing the following work will NOT be applied towards the required total:

Volunteering with animals (veterinarian’s office, animal shelter).
- This excludes sites where animals are used for therapeutic purposes
Organizations with political affiliation (campaigns, rallies)
Fundraising
Sporting events (working a score clock, refereeing)
On campus work – we encourage students to get out in the community!

There are a number of service sites around the Denver area that have wonderful volunteer opportunities. We encourage students to choose sites that involve their interests and challenge them to grow as individuals.

Children and Teens

Big Brothers, Big Sisters – Working with children as mentors.
Children’s Literacy Center – Tutor children and help develop their literacy skills.
Colfax Community Network – After school program.
Denver Kids Inc. – Mentoring and tutoring youth from higher risk environments.
Escuela de Guadalupe –Mentoring and tutoring students at a K-5 dual-language school.
Girls Inc. of Metro Denver – Mentoring, tutoring and supporting female youth.
Mile High Montessori – “Providing a quality educational experience, inspired by the Montessori approach, for Denver’s most vulnerable children.”

Reading Partners – Provide one-on-one reading instructing and mentoring to school-aged kids.
Shiloh Home, Inc. – Mentoring, tutoring and supporting youth who have experienced abuse, neglect or trauma.

The Rise School of Denver – “The Rise School is an inclusive non-profit preschool, serving children ages 12 months to pre-k with and without developmental disabilities.”
Tennyson Center for Children – Empowering children who have experienced abuse, neglect, and trauma to bravely, and safely, change their life’s story.
Warren Village – Evening child care for families in transitional housing; 6 months requirement, 4 hours a month

Extreme Community Makeover - Extreme Community Makeover coordinates volunteer teams to partner with underserved people to improve their own homes and neighborhoods.

Senior Assistance

A Little Help – “Connecting neighbors to help seniors thrive”
Bessie’s Hope – Visit with residents on a weekly basis by joining the Family/Elder Volunteer Program
Christian Living Communities – Activities, visiting, and companionship with senior residents and members of the community
Golden Orchard Assisted Living – Activities, visiting and companionship with senior residents
Hallmark Nursing Center – Activities, visiting and companionship with senior residents
Libby Bortz Assisted Living Center – Assisted living facility for folks with modest incomes. A small, personal setting with great residents in Historic Downtown Littleton.

Seniors’ Resource Centers – Assist seniors in maximizing their individual and personal dignity through various services
Senior Support Services – “Denver’s only day center for hungry and homeless seniors. The day center is a safe place to spend time, socialize with others, and participate in activities.”
The Argyle – Arts & crafts assistant, companion, reader, and visitor

Meals and Family Services

Cafe 180 – “To reduce hunger in the community by providing meals to everyone, regardless of ability to pay”
Clothes to Kids of Denver –Provide clothing to low income, school-aged children in Denver County, free of charge
Crossroads of the Rockies – Food bank, clothing distribution, tutoring
Denver Rescue Mission – Help meet the needs of homeless, hungry and people in need
Dolls for Daughters – “To support underprivileged children and their families in Colorado by providing toys, food, and more during the holidays, school supplies and clothing during the school year, and assisting families through community outreach, financial planning and professional support.”
Father Woody’s Haven of Hope – Provide food, clothing, shelter and other services to those who are homeless
Food Bank of the Rockies –Food reclamation and distribution to help combat hunger
Gabriel House Project –Outreach program that helps pregnant women and new mothers in need.
Hope House of Colorado –Home for teen moms and their children
Joshua Station Denver – “Helps families move from homelessness to stable housing and self-sufficiency through transitional housing, holistic support services, counseling, skill development, parenting guidance, and educational support.”

Lutheran Family Services, Refugee & Asylee Program – Help individuals and families rebuild their lives after recently arriving in the U.S.

Mi Casa Resource Center –“Mi Casa has been dedicated to advancing the economic success of Latino and working families in the Denver Metro area”
Samaritan House Homeless Shelter – Meal companions, clothing room and childcare opportunities with people who are homeless
The Action Center – Food pantry, clothing bank and other services to help those in need
The Gathering Place – “The Gathering Place is the only daytime drop-in center in metropolitan Denver that serves women, their children, and transgender individuals who are experiencing poverty, many of whom are also experiencing homelessness.”
We Don’t Waste – Collect excess food from events and organizations, and redistribute to hungry members of the community.
Wee Cycle – “We collect, “weecycle” and match essential baby gear to families through partner organizations focused on alleviating poverty, homelessness, domestic violence, teen pregnancy and under-employment”

Brent’s Place – “Brent’s Place is the only Children’s Hospital Colorado approved Safe-Clean housing facility for immune compromised patients and their families, providing a living environment that is essential to healing and recovery.”

Project C.U.R.E. – Provide donated medical supplies and equipment to developing nations around the world

Ronald McDonald House – A home away from home for families of children being treated at local hospitals
The Children’s Hospital – Opportunities vary but include visiting with patients, creative play and craft cart
V.A. Medical Center – Support those who have served the country in their recovery and needs

People With Special Needs

Adam’s Camp – Summer camp assistant for children, youth and young adults; companion for children with special needs, recreation assistant, and youth program assistant.
Anchor Center for Blind Children – Support children who have visual impairments or blindness through classroom and recreational activities.
National Sports Center for the Disabled – Working with children and adults with special needs in athletic and recreational settings
Praying Hands Ranch – Assisting with Hippotherapy, Equine Programs, and Horticultural Experiences for therapeutic services
Rosie’s Ranch – Work with horses to help children with deafness or oral language challenges.

Roundup Fellowship – To provide a variety of residential and community-based services to children and adults with developmental special needs
REVEL – REVEL is a non-profit organization for teens and young adults with autism and related disorders and their peers. Our priority is to build a sense of community where everyone belongs, focuses on self-determination and autonomy and develops skills important in life as a teen and adult.
Special Olympics -Working with children and adults with special needs in athletic and recreational settings
The Friendship Circle – Become a buddy/mentor/friend for a teen or child with special needs. Attend events and social activities with kids in the program.
The Right Step – Assist in therapeutic horse riding sessions for people with disabilities.
Zuma’s Rescue Ranch – “Serves as advocate and mentor for abused and neglected humans and horses in need, providing them with the trust and love they need to take their next step successfully into our world.”
