Our Lower School Intramural Sports Program provides Grades 1-5 students with additional sports opportunities focused on fundamental skills and technique development. With small group instruction tailored to individual ability levels, students will build confidence, develop athletic intelligence, and prepare for Middle School athletics.

Courses Overview

• Common Courses: Your child will automatically be enrolled in year-long grade-level Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies courses.

• Math: Math course placement is based on prior teacher recommendations, standardized test scores, and report card grades. When it is unclear which math course is the best fit for a student, we reach out to parents and consult with you directly. Occasionally, we will suggest that the student come in to take an SMA math placement assessment. For your reference, this document provides an overview of the SMA Middle School Math Pathways. The Grade 7 and 8 Course Registration Survey provides space for you to share information about your child’s past math experience and to ask questions about SMA’s math program.

• Academic Benchmarks: When balancing section rosters in all courses, it is often helpful to have recent academic benchmarks. We have access to the academic documents submitted in your application. If your child’s current school administers end-of-year standardized assessments (CMAS, iReady, MAP, IOWA, or similar tests), when you receive the results, please email a copy to Jessica Williamson at jwilliamson@smanet.org. 

• World Language, Music, and Health & Physical Education: All students also participate in a year-long world language course, music ensemble, and Health and Physical Education course. In partnership with your child, please complete this important Grade 7 and 8 Course Registration Survey by Monday, May 4. The survey allows you to indicate which world language your child hopes to study, share preferences for music ensemble/instrument, and order a PE uniform in the appropriate size. All families will be automatically billed for a PE uniform. Music placements will be communicated to families approximately one month before the start of the new school year. Questions about the Music program can be directed to Music Department Chair, Jack McHugh, at jmchugh@smanet.org. 

• Elective Courses: Your child will also be automatically enrolled in a quarter-long Religion course. Additionally, your child will take three elective courses, each one-quarter long. The Grade 7/8 Elective Course Preference Survey will be sent to families via email in two weeks and will include offerings in Fine Arts, Performing Arts, Maker & Design, Culinary Arts, and much more.

• The SMA Athletic Department offers a variety of optional after-school sports teams. Specific practice days, times, and locations vary by sport. In partnership with your child, please complete this Middle School Fall Sports Registration Survey by Monday, May 4. The survey provides detailed information about each Fall sports option. It also has space to indicate that your child will not be participating in a Fall sport during the 2026-2027 school year. Team placements will be communicated to families on or about May 14.

Incoming Grade 6 Students:

• Complete the Grade 6 Course Registration survey by April 21 to indicate your child's preferred world language, music ensemble/instrument preferences, PE uniform size, and math placement test date preference (or opt out).

Courses Overview

• Common courses

SMA Campus

An online signup will be shared the first week in August, inviting families to sign up for an Orientation Day Welcome Conference on either August 14 or August 17. Students and parent/guardian(s) come to the twenty-minute Welcome Conference. The conference is with the child’s CAT Advisor. The student stays in the conference for a few minutes, then joins other students as they try out their lockers, explore the common areas, and meet the Arts and Athletics faculty. Meanwhile, parents and guardians meet with the CAT Advisor to share their hopes, dreams, and expectations for their child’s Middle School experience. After the conference, parents and their children also see to some technology tasks, such as setting iPad passwords. The Welcome Conference and orientation tasks take about 60 minutes in total.

Students work with Amber Summers, Director of Service Learning, throughout their four years to find the right service fit, navigate the curriculum, and track progress toward graduation requirements. 

Get started with the Service Program FAQs. It explains the program, answers common questions, and includes important links such as the approved service sites list. Students should review it with their parents/caregivers before getting started. 

Grade 9 students must complete ten hours of service with an approved organization by February. A few things to keep in mind:

• Find an organization you enjoy. We're all different. Some of us like physical work, while others prefer one-on-one conversations. You'll see close to 100 approved sites on our list (found in the FAQs). There's something for everyone! While there is an opportunity to propose other service organizations, we would like all 9th graders to stick to our pre-approved list this year. Please complete all 10 hours with one organization.

• Complete your hours over the summer. I promise you will get more out of it when you're not juggling homework, sports, and extracurricular activities.

Entering students will be placed in Algebra I by default. Students can be placed into more advanced courses by taking our placement tests. If you plan to start in Algebra I, you do not need to take a placement test. 

Math placement tests are administered by the Math Department Chair, Dr. Yun Chen, and will be held in person on the following dates/times:

•  Current SMA Middle School students: Monday, April 27, from 1-2 p.m. 
• New to SMA students: Saturday, May 2, from 8:30-9:30 a.m.
• Make-up date: Wednesday, May 20, from 5:30-6:30 p.m.

Information about the math placement test:
• Calculators are not allowed
• This 25-question test covers typical Algebra I topics, including those with exponents, linear equations and inequalities, systems of equations, and quadratic functions.
• If you have taken a comprehensive Geometry course (including right triangle trigonometry) and feel you can demonstrate mastery of that content, we'll ask you to take a second, 30-minute placement exam covering that material on the same day, followed by the Algebra I placement exam.  

• Complete the Course Registration form by April 28, 2026, with your top choices.
  • The form is accessible only using your student’s SMA school email.
  • The form will let you edit your responses until the due date.

Students interested in starting beyond the first level in each language can take a placement test.

World Language placement tests for all students will be held in person and will take about one hour. It will be administered by the world language teachers on the following dates/times:
