Lower School Loretto Leaders in Action
Regina Drey SL

We help our community and we make SMA happy and kind.

We show the Loretto Schools by showing everyone how to be respectful.

In Loretto Leaders, I meet new people and try new things.

We get to help younger kids be the best people they can be.

We follow the Loretto School Values and help others do that.

I love the meetings.

I love writing and hearing from my Loretto Buddy.

Being a Loretto Leader is Awesome!

These reflections say it all! Our Loretto Leaders — 45 students from Grade 4 and 5 who serve all year — truly live out our Loretto School Values each day.

Students apply to be Loretto Leaders by writing a letter sharing how they will model the values. Twice a month, they meet by grade to serve the community,  grow as leaders, and learn more about Loretto.

You’ll see Loretto Leaders everywhere! They welcome prospective families as greeters and tour guides, speak at Admissions events, and lead lunchtime composting and recycling to support Loretto’s commitment to caring for Earth. They also create presentations for ‘Be Loretto Day’ in partnership with the national Students Rebuild program.

Loretto Leaders rotate responsibilities, including leading parts of assemblies, tidying the hallways, refreshing the Wildcat Loretto Question board, and organizing the Lost and Found.

They created paper chains with daily ideas for building community during Advent and helped with the Late Start collection for Southwest Improvement Council (SWIC).

Recently, two Grade 8 students returned to share how being Lower School Loretto Leaders prepared them for leadership in Middle School — and the younger students were all ears.

Next up, Loretto Leaders will host a special event for their Loretto Community Buddies!  The Buddies are 27 Loretto Community sisters and co-members who are paired one-on-one with students and write to one another about their interests, their lives when they were the students’ age, plus advice on leadership and living the Loretto School Values. The event will be lunch with their local Buddies and Zoom chats with the out-of-towners, who make up over half of the group.

Now in its ninth year, the LS Loretto Leaders program continues to give students joyful, hands-on ways to live the Loretto School Values.

On a personal note:

Religion teacher Carrie Assell, Interim Assistant Principal Mary Shay, and I work with Loretto Leaders. The students’ enthusiasm and desire to serve are extraordinary. Ask for volunteers,  and before you can even say what the project is, there will be lots of waving hands ready to help. These students are kind, caring young people who truly live Loretto every day. It is an honor to work with them.
